Body scan

A slow tour—not fixing, noticing.

About two minutes. Sit or lie down; soften your gaze or close your eyes if that feels safe.

Somatic awareness: Listening to the body’s signals

Stress, overwhelm, and unprocessed emotions rarely stay confined to abstract thoughts. They routinely manifest as physical bracing—a clenched jaw, tightened shoulders, shallow chest breathing, or a knotted stomach. Because cognitive rumination can trap us in circular loops, directing gentle attention into physical sensations provides an effective circuit-breaker for mental spirals.

The objective of a body scan is not to force immediate relaxation or eliminate all physical discomfort. Rather, it is an exercise in interoception—cultivating kind curiosity about what your physical vessel is carrying. By simply acknowledging tension without judgment, your autonomic nervous system begins to disarm its chronic vigilance.

Three principles for an effective body scan

1. Observe without forcing

If an area remains tight, don't wrestle with it. Acknowledge the constriction like an old friend holding a heavy load.

2. Exhale into tight spaces

As your attention sweeps across each body part, use the natural rhythm of your out-breath as a cue to soften surrounding muscles.

3. Welcome neutral zones

Notice parts that feel completely fine, grounded, or neutral. Balancing awareness between tension and ease settles the mind.

Frequently asked questions

What if a body part feels completely numb or absent?

Numbness is a completely normal somatic response, often indicating chronic dissociation or fatigue. Note the absence without criticism and gently continue onward.

Can I practice this lying down before sleep?

Yes. A reclining body scan is one of the most effective non-pharmacological techniques for easing evening restlessness and preparing the brain for restorative sleep.

What if focusing on my body triggers anxiety?

If internal scanning feels overwhelming, open your eyes and ground your attention externally on five visible objects in your room before returning to your breath.
